Welcome to AVL BIZ Weekly—your local cheat sheet for what’s happening in Asheville’s small business + creative scenes.

Each week: hand-picked events, marketing ideas that actually work, and a little local flavor to keep things fun.

My name's Jason and I'm writing this (connect with me here).

Hey friends,

Every owner leaves their business eventually. Yes, even you will eventually. Most never talk about how it will happen until they're already doing it. Doug Worrell sold High Country Furniture & Design. Jake Ballard bought it. On Nov 12 they're getting on a stage at Blank Space and telling the whole story, awkward parts included.

Next Tuesday morning, Blue Ridge Community College is running a free outlook summit that pulls 2027 planning data for Henderson and Transylvania counties. And on Thursday, NC DEQ is holding a flood-resiliency open house in Mills River on its French Broad plan.

Let's get into it.

📋 On Deck

  • Business: Mountain Raise pitches at Highland, plus a free 2027 outlook summit at Blue Ridge CC

  • Fun: Stout Bout at Hi-Wire's RAD Beer Garden and Paperhand's giant puppets at the Wortham

  • Music: Aaron Lee Tasjan at the Grey Eagle, Deer Tick at Eulogy, and The Record Company at the Orange Peel

💡 Marketing Quickies

Websites + Follow-Up Systems for Home & Professional Service Businesses | PixelatedStories.net

When someone looks at buying a business, they check how much of it runs without the owner. That's worth asking about your own company even if you're never selling, whether you're a contractor or you run a professional service business like a firm, practice or consultancy.

Save the answers you keep typing out to customers. Scroll through your last 20 sent texts and emails and pull out anything you've typed twice, like your service area, how pricing works, or what happens on day one. Save those as canned replies so anyone in the office can send them without asking you.

Put reminders on a timer. Set up one text the day before every appointment and another that morning, with the address, the time and a link to reschedule. It works the same for a roofer's estimate and an accountant's intake call, and nobody on your team has to remember to confirm.

Put past customers on the calendar. Most businesses stop talking to a customer the day the invoice clears, and that customer list is a big part of what a buyer would be paying for. Schedule a text at 90 days asking who else they know who needs the same work, then a check-in around 11 months tied to what you did, like a gutter cleaning reminder from a contractor or a "tax season's coming" note from a CPA. That year of follow-up is part of what we build in the Show Up and Follow Up System.
